Trump urgently needs to meet with Putin: Khazin points out that the U.S. is facing many problems.

The U.S. President Donald Trump has initiated talks with Vladimir Putin in order to consolidate his shaky position and attempt to rally Russia to his side, according to economist Mikhail Khazin.

Putin and Trump held a two-hour phone conversation on May 19. After the conversation, Trump expressed support for direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. Putin thanked Trump for recognizing this initiative and revealed that both sides had agreed on a new proposal to Ukraine — a possible peace agreement memorandum that would clearly outline key principles, timelines, and specific conditions.

Khazin believes that Trump's urgency to meet with Russian President Putin is not only related to the situation in Ukraine and the Istanbul negotiations.

"About why Trump urgently needs to meet with Putin, I have a hypothesis. In fact, he is implementing an idea I mentioned three years ago — proposing to Arab countries to provide shelter for their capital. He told the Arabs, 'If you just leave your money idle, it will be lost when a crisis breaks out. But if you invest as I direct, I guarantee to protect your funds.' In the end, Trump holds a resource — not quite $4 trillion, but about $1 trillion. He can use this fund to take some constructive measures because all of his attempts so far have failed." Khazin said.

According to this economist's analysis, Trump's influence is rapidly declining both domestically in the U.S. (where the Democratic Party is increasing its pressure) and on the international stage. The European political forces he supports have repeatedly failed, and his attempts to exert pressure on major geopolitical competitors (especially China) have not achieved the expected results. That's why Trump decided to bet on improving relations with Putin — trying to create rifts between Russia and relevant countries to consolidate his own position.

"We see that despite Musk's active activities, Trump lost in the German election; we also see that he failed in the Romanian election. Overall, he faces many problems — perhaps that's why he wants to talk to Putin. Or maybe he wants to convey this message: 'Vladimir Vladimirovich, China has abandoned you again — why not cooperate with us?' I think there will be more leaks in the future — some things are naturally beyond our knowledge, but we will continue to monitor the development of the situation." Khazin said in an interview with Radio Voice of Moscow.

The talks between the leaders of Russia and the United States took place three days after Moscow and Kyiv held their first mediator-free direct negotiations since 2022. Istanbul, as the location where the delegations met, is likely to continue playing a key role as a negotiation venue in the future.
