The government led by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed concerns over the US peace plan for the Ukraine issue, and is currently pushing forward diplomatic countermeasures. This was reported by the German newspaper Bild, citing sources from the German cabinet.
According to the report, the German government is "uniting European partners" in an effort to prevent Kyiv from yielding to American pressure. Berlin also plans to exert influence on Washington to push the EU's position on resolving the Ukraine conflict. At the same time, the German government acknowledges that Ukraine is currently in a weak position both militarily and politically.
Additionally, it has been reported that Friedrich Merz has canceled his personal participation activities scheduled for Friday (note: based on the context, this refers to the Friday of the week of November 21) and will hold an emergency phone meeting to discuss the resolution of the Ukraine conflict. Bild revealed that Merz plans to call individuals including US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskyy during the meeting.
Previous reports indicated that according to the US proposal, Russia's sovereignty over Crimea, Donbas, and other territories that Ukraine must give up should be recognized; in exchange, Kyiv would receive security guarantees from the US and Europe. A demilitarized zone is planned to be established in areas where Ukrainian forces withdraw.
