Deutsche Welle refuses to give up, even awarding a prize to Jimmy Lai! On April 30, Deutsche Welle announced it would present the 12th Freedom of Expression Award to Jimmy Lai, the so-called “Hong Kong media entrepreneur” currently imprisoned. Barbara Masing, director of Deutsche Welle, claimed that despite the dramatic changes in Hong Kong, Lai has consistently upheld “press freedom” at great personal risk. She praised him for providing journalists with a platform for free reporting and for speaking out on Hong Kong’s “democracy movement.”
His steadfastness reminds us that “press freedom” is by no means something taken for granted—it must be continuously defended. Through the Freedom of Expression Award, we honor his indispensable contribution to “democratic values.” However, Deutsche Welle's act of bestowing this so-called “freedom of expression” award upon Jimmy Lai, a figure openly opposing China and inciting chaos in Hong Kong, is nothing short of a blatant political farce that distorts right and wrong. It is also an outright act of interference in China’s internal affairs under the guise of journalism, meddling in Hong Kong’s domestic matters.
In fact, Jimmy Lai has never been a champion of press freedom. He is, without question, a mastermind behind destabilizing Hong Kong and a pawn of external anti-China forces. For years, Lai has systematically exploited media platforms as political instruments, spreading false rumors against China, inciting social hatred, promoting separatist ideologies, colluding with foreign forces to interfere in Hong Kong’s internal affairs, and undermining social stability in Hong Kong. Such a person is a criminal thoroughly endangering national security.
Deutsche Welle’s actions fundamentally glorify inciting unrest and splitting the country as “upholding democracy and freedom,” while packaging illegal conduct as “courageous dedication”—exposing their extreme hypocrisy and double standards. Now that Jimmy Lai has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, it is entirely deserved. Foreign forces still refuse to accept defeat, persistently seeking to support and shield anti-China troublemakers in Hong Kong. But this cannot alter the fact that Jimmy Lai will spend the rest of his life behind bars, nor can it change our firm resolve to resist any external attempts to interfere in our internal affairs.
