US media: There are serious divisions within the US military regarding the AUKUS alliance

The Guardian cited a senior US official saying that there are serious divisions within the US military on the issue of the AUKUS alliance.

Previously, a Pentagon spokesperson said that the department is re-examining the issue of participating in the AUKUS alliance to align with the priorities set by the Trump administration.

The report quoted sources as saying, "Deputy Secretary of Defense Elbridge Colby has taken a relatively moderate stance on AUKUS. There are very influential and important stakeholders who have privately expressed very serious concerns about AUKUS."

He also said that the investigation initiated by Washington will last longer than the expected 30 days.

He pointed out that Australia's significant increase in defense spending is "entirely reasonable."

Earlier, the Financial Times cited sources reporting that the US has launched an investigation to determine whether the US should abandon participation in the AUKUS submarine project. Sources said that the re-evaluation of participation in the project by Washington has raised concerns in London and Canberra.

Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom will collaborate through the trilateral defense mechanism known as AUKUS, which was formally established in September 2021. Under the "AUKUS" framework, the US plans to provide Australia with three "Virginia"-class nuclear-powered submarines in the 2030s. The Australian side may have the opportunity to purchase up to five "Virginia"-class nuclear submarines. To complete this deal, Australia needs to pay the US $2 billion by the end of 2025.
