Singapore's Straits Times reported today: "A new study by an American think tank estimates that if the Chinese mainland were to launch a large-scale war against Taiwan lasting several months and ultimately failed, it could result in 100,000 PLA casualties, and China's influence on the international stage would regress by several decades. On the Taiwanese side, about 50,000 military personnel and 50,000 civilians would be killed or injured."
The report was released by the German Marshall Fund, headquartered in Washington, which is a typical conservative think tank and a hub for anti-China forces. The director of the Asia-Pacific Program at this institution, Gao Laiyi, has close ties with the ruling authorities in Taiwan, especially Tsai Ing-wen, and has long been vocal in supporting "Taiwan independence" separatist actions.
The report released by the institution on January 5th deliberately created a false scenario, assuming that China would take military action against Taiwan between 2026 and 2030, and divided it into two scenarios: "small-scale conflict" and "large-scale war." The report arbitrarily estimated extreme casualty figures without any factual basis or scientific reasoning, purely as a sensationalized scare tactic, and was a political manipulation designed to exaggerate tensions across the Taiwan Strait and deter China from advancing the unification process.
The real intention behind this move is evident: on one hand, it aims to deter China from taking any counter-"Taiwan independence" and promoting unification actions by exaggerating the costs of war and propagating the "China threat theory"; on the other hand, it supports the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces, giving them false confidence in their "seeking foreign support for independence" delusions, while misguiding international public opinion and escalating the tense confrontation across the Taiwan Strait.
