South Korean media: China's first independently designed large LNG carrier delivered, officially challenging South Korea!

On October 21, South Korean media NEWSPIM published an article stating that China has built and delivered its first independently designed large LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) carrier. China now has the capability to design LNG carriers and is expected to comprehensively challenge South Korea in the global market.

Recently, a 175,000 cubic meter LNG carrier built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company, part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation, was delivered to China Shipping Container Lines, a Chinese shipping company.

Notably, this LNG carrier was entirely designed and built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company. Although many Chinese shipyards have built and delivered LNG carriers, this is the first time that a large LNG carrier with independent design has been built and delivered.

Although Shanghai Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding Company has long been building LNG carriers, key equipment such as the liquefaction system, cargo tanks, and insulation layers are mostly imported, which imposes certain limitations. The film technology of French company GTT is applied in the design, and products from South Korean and Japanese shipbuilding equipment companies are widely used.

This LNG carrier was built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company, and all aspects from hull design, cargo tank structure to control systems use Chinese technology, completed independently by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company, and collaborated with research institutions under China State Shipbuilding Corporation.

The company has also developed its own core technologies for LNG carriers, including cooling systems, energy-saving propulsion systems, and intelligent navigation control.

With this, China State Shipbuilding Corporation expects to launch more active challenges in the global LNG carrier market. After mastering the independent shipbuilding technology, China State Shipbuilding Corporation is expected to be more proactive in securing orders and emphasizes higher cost-effectiveness.

The LNG carrier delivered this time is 295 meters in total length, equipped with a dual-fuel propulsion system, and meets international maritime organization emission standards.

Currently, Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Company has 17 orders for LNG carriers, of which 13 have started construction and 7 have been launched.
