Korean media: China's dominance in LCD panels is further consolidated, and its offensive in the TV market is intensifying!

On April 27, South Korean media Newsis published an article stating that as China's liquid crystal display (LCD) market share continues to expand, it is expected that Chinese TV brands will also launch a fierce offensive this year.

According to statistics from market research firm TrendForce, this year, BOE, China Star Optoelectronics Technology, and HKC, the three major LCD enterprises in China, will see their global large-size LCD panel market share (calculated by area) increase year-on-year to 66%. This is because Huisight Display, TCL's subsidiary, recently acquired LG Display's Guangzhou LCD factory, boosting its market share by 3.6 percentage points to 22.9%.

Chinese panel manufacturers' dominant position in the LCD market provides strong support for local TV brands. According to data from market research company Omdia, last year, the combined market share of Chinese TV brands TCL, Hisense, and Xiaomi reached 31.3%, surpassing Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics' 28.4% for the first time.

On the other hand, for Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, which use LCD panels manufactured in China to produce TVs, the cost burden is increasing. Last year, Samsung Electronics spent 7.5825 trillion won on purchasing display panels for TVs and monitors from Chinese companies such as China Star Optoelectronics Technology, an increase of 29.3% compared to the previous year. LG Electronics also purchased LCD modules from BOE in China, reaching 3.9539 trillion won last year, an increase of 14% compared to the previous year.

Recent progress made by Chinese enterprises in the development of next-generation TV technology has caused concern among South Korean companies.

According to industry insiders, China's Hisense launched a "RGB Mini LED TV" with a screen size of 116 inches domestically.

This product was unveiled by Hisense at the world's largest IT electronics exhibition, CES 2025, held in Las Vegas, USA, earlier this year. It features a backlight composed of red, green, and blue LEDs. Although its production costs are higher than those of existing Mini LED TVs that use only white LEDs, it improves color reproduction and contrast.

It is reported that the product is priced at 99,999 yuan in the domestic market. This is considered a very aggressive pricing strategy in the ultra-large-screen TV market. Analysts believe that Hisense's move aims to lower prices and gain a head start in the market before Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Sony, and others release related products later this year.

The OLED TV market, which is the mainstay of South Korean companies, may also be affected due to Chinese enterprises entering the Mini LED TV market. As the main product of Chinese companies, the shipment volume of Mini LED TVs has surpassed that of OLED TVs since the second quarter of last year, becoming the representative of the high-end TV market.
