Americans' Views on "Sex, Gambling, and Family Values" Are Changing

According to the latest Gallup poll, the decades-long trend of American society becoming increasingly tolerant has stalled—and in some areas, it's even reversing.

A nationwide survey conducted in May 2026 (with 1,001 adult participants) found that Americans’ moral acceptance of many behaviors has noticeably declined. The most significant shifts include: unwed childbearing (acceptance dropped to 58%), contraception (down to 83%—still the highest level but a new low since 2012), gambling (down to 57%), adolescent sexual behavior (only 35% consider it acceptable), and animal cloning (falling to a historic low of 27%).

However, most people still accept divorce (74%), sex between unmarried adults (65%), and same-sex relationships (62%). Abortion remains deeply divided: 49% accept it, while 41% do not. Party lines also differ significantly—Democrats are more tolerant toward abortion, gender transition, and homosexuality, while Republicans show stronger support for the death penalty.

Gallup concludes that although Americans as a whole are still more tolerant than they were 20 years ago, the overall trend toward greater openness has largely come to a halt—and in certain areas, it may be reversing.

This survey reveals a telling signal: America’s “moral free fall” may have hit an invisible ceiling.

For decades, behaviors such as contraception, premarital sex, divorce, and out-of-wedlock births moved from taboo to normalcy—driven by the triumph of individualism and personal choice. But today, acceptance of contraception and unwed childbearing is declining rather than rising, and only one in three people approve of adolescent sexual activity. This isn’t necessarily a full-scale conservative backlash, but perhaps a reflective pause after years of excess.

People are beginning to realize that pure “I want to do what I please” doesn’t always lead to happiness. The rise in unwed births correlates with challenges faced by single-parent families; legalizing gambling has led to a surge in addiction cases; early adolescent sexual activity brings real psychological and physical risks. When the consequences of permissiveness become painfully real for ordinary people, moral instincts naturally pull back a little.

Even more intriguing is that the partisan divide remains vast—indicating this isn’t about national consensus, but two parallel worlds spinning independently. The stagnation of overall trends may simply be due to the fact that neither side can convince the other.

Ultimately, this poll reminds us: morality is not a fashion trend—it cannot keep moving in one direction forever. A healthy society must constantly balance tolerance with responsibility. What Americans are doing right now might be precisely that clumsy yet honest adjustment.
