US media: Hong Kong seeks to become a base for electric vehicle assembly in China

Bloomberg, on September 12, cited an anonymous source who said that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government is seeking to establish an electric vehicle assembly base requiring advanced technology, with the location planned in the New Territories.

The source said that Chinese electric vehicle companies participating in the discussions include the FAW Group.

The Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Bureau responded that according to the "Hong Kong Science and Technology Development Blueprint" released in 2022, Hong Kong has been actively promoting the development of strategic industries, including advanced manufacturing.

Bloomberg stated that although Hong Kong presents itself as an advanced manufacturing center to attract investment and create job opportunities, high land prices and high labor costs pose challenges to the plan. In addition, the Chinese electric vehicle industry is facing overcapacity.

However, Chinese electric vehicle battery manufacturers and parts suppliers are still setting up stores in Hong Kong to take advantage of Hong Kong's financial system to expand their global operations.
