Overseas media: Chinese rare mineral "tellurium" endows blind mice with "supervision", bringing hope for human blindness treatment.
Researchers from Fudan University in China have developed an artificial retina using the rare mineral tellurium, which is mainly produced in China. This has successfully restored vision to blind mice and monkeys, and given them "supervision" ability to perceive infrared light.
The study was published in the journal Science on May 5th. The research used tellurium nanowire implants to create biocompatible devices that convert visible light and infrared radiation into electrical signals, transmitting them to the brain without the need for auxiliary equipment.
Tellurium is a silver-white element as rare as platinum, being a byproduct of copper refining. It has excellent photoelectric properties and can replace retinal photoreceptor cells. This breakthrough provides significant hope for treating human blindness, demonstrating the potential of tellurium in the biomedical field.
