Reference News Network, July 3 report. According to AFP, Brussels, July 2 report: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will face a no-confidence vote initiated by far-right members of the European Parliament on July 10, although the vote is likely to fail.

The report states that the motion submitted to the plenary session of the European Parliament has met the minimum requirement of 72 signatures needed to determine the voting date.

European Parliament members will debate the motion on August 8 in Strasbourg.

The motion was initiated by Romanian far-right European Parliament member Georgi Piperea. He said that during the EU's negotiations to purchase vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic, the communication between von der Leyen and Albert Bourla, CEO of Pfizer Inc., was not transparent.

Their communications have caused dissatisfaction among numerous anti-vaccine organizations and The New York Times, which had applied for the release of these text messages.

Piperea also accused the European Commission of "interfering" in the Romanian presidential election. In the election, nationalist George Simion lost to pro-EU Nicușor Dan.

Von der Leyen has a very low chance of failing the no-confidence vote.

To succeed, the motion needs an absolute majority - at least 361 votes out of 720. (Translation/Li Sha)
