EU Senior Commissioner Beaune Urges Accelerated Development of Autonomous Driving, Reluctant to Fall Behind China and the US

Claude Beaune, EU Commissioner for Strategy and Planning, stated on Monday, May 11, that currently all autonomous vehicle models are either made in the United States or China, and called for coordinated European action to change course, "to avoid missing out on this technological revolution."

EU Commissioner for Strategy and Planning Claude Beaune expressed concern that Europe risks falling behind compared to China and the US in the field of autonomous driving, noting that "this technology has already been deployed in dozens of cities across the US and China for several months, yet remains completely absent in Europe and France."

Beaune, former French Minister of Transport, pointed out that developing autonomous vehicle technology could provide a convenient solution for elderly people and individuals with disabilities in rural areas.

According to a report from the EU High-Level Committee on Strategy and Planning, Europe is "far behind" in the race toward autonomous vehicles, and unless Europe adopts a catch-up strategy, it risks becoming a "digital colony" dependent on foreign companies in this domain.

Differing from its American and Chinese counterparts in this field, Europe could integrate autonomous vehicles into public transportation systems rather than relying on partially empty, driverless taxis.

As recommended by the EU High-Level Committee on Strategy and Planning, due to Europe’s lack of relevant technology at the vehicle mobility level, such integration could help reassert control over future mobility patterns.

Last April, Tesla’s supervised autonomous driving system received approval in the Netherlands—making it the first European country to adopt U.S.-style autonomous driving technology.

According to Reuters, Tesla CEO Elon Musk remains optimistic about the future approval of his "Full Self-Driving" system in Europe; however, Europe currently maintains skepticism, particularly concerning safety issues of autonomous systems on icy roads.
