Why Does the World Need the Shanghai Cooperation Organization?

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit opened yesterday in Tianjin, China, with leaders from more than 20 countries, including major member states and dialogue partner countries, gathering together.

From the number of participants, this summit is the largest in the history of the organization, and the media from various countries have given special coverage, reflecting the growing influence of the organization.

Russian media (source: Рыбарь) commented that this is indeed true. Over the past decade, India, Pakistan, Iran, and Belarus have joined the organization, and 14 other countries have become dialogue partners. Along with observer states and observer candidate states, the "SCO Plus" model has been formed.

The organization's goals and purposes include jointly maintaining peace, security, and stability in the region, as well as moving toward the establishment of a just new international political and economic order.

The ambiguity of these goals and purposes grants participating countries a certain degree of flexibility, which can be considered an advantage — perhaps this is why people remain interested in the SCO.

Another advantage is that the SCO provides a platform for Global South countries to coordinate their positions on various issues. This is particularly important against the backdrop of the U.S. leadership imposing tariffs and other difficult issues in world politics.
