Media: The Iran War Enters Its Eighth Day: Israel Claims 80+ Fighter Jets Attacked Tehran and Central Iran, One of the Largest Airstrikes Since the Conflict Began
The Israeli military stated that on Saturday, March 7, more than 80 fighter jets launched a round of airstrikes targeting military objectives, missile launchers, and other targets in Tehran and central Iran.
In a statement, the military said: "More than 80 Israeli Air Force fighter jets... launched a new wave of attacks targeting infrastructure belonging to the Iranian terrorist regime."
This is one of the largest airstrikes declared by Israel since the regional war began on February 28. Israeli aircraft attacked a military academy affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The Israeli military stated that the facility was being used as an "emergency military facility" at the time. The military stated that the location was used for military operations and thus was considered a "legitimate military target."
The statement said that other targeted locations also included an underground command center, a missile storage facility, and multiple missile launch positions, "with the aim of reducing the scale of missile attacks against Israeli territory."
At the beginning of the war, when the US and Israel conducted airstrikes against Iran, the Israeli military had stated that approximately 200 fighter jets were involved in the operation and called it the largest aerial attack in the history of the Israeli Air Force.
Iranian Reports
On Saturday morning, Iran stated that it had attacked a tanker in the Gulf region. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated in a statement forwarded by Tasnim News Agency: "This morning, a tanker named 'Prima' was hit by an explosive drone after ignoring repeated warnings from the Revolutionary Guards. The military had previously warned the vessel that navigation in the Strait of Hormuz had been prohibited, and the area was unsafe."
Additionally, the Iranian armed forces stated that their navy launched a large-scale drone attack on US bases and "occupied territories" (referring to Israel). The targets included the Al-Minhad Air Base in the UAE, a base in Kuwait, and a "strategic facility" in Israel. The statement was published by the official news agency Islamic Republic News Agency.
Previously, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that the US Navy was preparing to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz. The Revolutionary Guard spokesperson Ali Mohammad Naeini stated: "We are waiting for them (the US military) to appear." According to data from the shipping website MarineTraffic, only 9 merchant ships have passed through the strait since Monday.
