According to the news office of the Kazakh President's administration, during his state visit to Islamabad, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev discussed the prospects of launching the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan railway project with Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
Tokayev said after meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif: "We discussed the potential of Pakistan's Karachi Port and Gwadar Port. As one of the priority issues, we also explored the development of the Caspian transport corridor and transit routes through Afghanistan. In this context, both sides discussed the implementation prospects of the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan railway project."
Tokayev pointed out that both sides agreed to take specific measures to further increase trade volume and set a target of raising trade volume to 1 billion US dollars in the near future.
In May 2025, the Kazakh Ministry of Trade and Integration announced that Astana and Islamabad signed an agreement allowing Kazakhstan to use Pakistan's Karachi Port and Gwadar Port. Gwadar Port is a key facility of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
