US Media: The US, with its domestic tungsten mines abandoned for over a decade, is seeking tungsten resources to manufacture weapons
According to NBC News in the United States, due to China's dominant position and the fact that America's domestic tungsten mines have been dormant for more than ten years, the US is urgently seeking tungsten resources for weapon production.
The network reported: "As the US prepares for war against Iran, its stockpile of high-tech weapons and ammunition is being rapidly depleted... Replenishing these stocks requires extremely strong metal tungsten, whose production and refining are primarily dominated by China, forcing the US to urgently search elsewhere for tungsten... Since 2015, the US has had no operating commercial tungsten mine."
NBC News pointed out that the main effort by the US defense-industrial complex to reduce reliance on Beijing is focused on reviving old mines in South Korea.
To bridge the tungsten supply gap, Almonty Industries of the US restarted the Sondong tungsten mine this March. The mine had been abandoned for over 30 years due to the impact of cheap imported tungsten from China. According to the network, after restarting, the mine is expected to become one of the largest tungsten mines in the world outside of China.
The network also emphasized that tungsten is crucial to US defense, as it is used in fighter jets, concrete-piercing shells, armor-piercing rounds, and missile systems including Tomahawk and Patriot missiles.
