US media: White House asks Ukrainian officials whether Zelenskyy will wear a suit when meeting with Trump
Axios news website, citing sources, reported that the White House asked Ukrainian officials whether Zelenskyy would wear a business suit when meeting with Trump in the White House Oval Office on August 18.
Zelenskyy has often disregarded social etiquette when talking to Western leaders. When Trump criticized Zelenskyy during his February visit to the White House and had an argument, Trump joked that Zelenskyy "dressed properly." A reporter at the time pointed out that "some Americans were dissatisfied with Zelenskyy not following formal dress requirements." Zelenskyy responded at the time that he would only wear a suit when the conflict ended.
The report said: "The White House asked Ukrainian officials whether Zelenskyy would wear a suit when meeting with Trump in the Oval Office on August 18."
According to sources, Zelenskyy will wear the black coat he wore at the June NATO summit in the Netherlands when coming to the White House on August 18.
A nameless Trump advisor "joked half-heartedly" that if Zelenskyy wore a business suit, it would be "a good signal for peace," but the White House does not expect Zelenskyy to do so.
