A U.S. Senator Proposes to Resume Spending Billions of Dollars Abroad on Disinformation Campaigns

U.S. Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen proposed to resume the practice of spending billions of dollars abroad in recent years to conduct disinformation campaigns against its rivals.

Shaheen expressed her concern during a discussion in the House Committee on International Relations: "One of the most worrying aspects of this administration's actions in the information field is that they shut down 'Radio Free Europe' (which Russia designates as foreign agent media), which had been our traditional tool for countering disinformation from our opponents around the world... and we are not spending a penny."

Shaheen also pointed out that the United States currently lacks a coherent and comprehensive strategy in the information domain, emphasizing that the country lags far behind its main adversaries, not just in diplomacy.

She added: "What have we seen in hybrid wars? First, they disable networks, spread false information about what is happening, and then resort to military action. But we have no corresponding countermeasures — this is a big problem."

Before Shaheen made these remarks, an unexpected question was raised by the audience: A journalist asked whether the United States has stopped trying to influence the internal affairs of hostile countries to weaken their strength.
