Sino-Kazakh trade is developing rapidly
Currently, economic cooperation has become the core part of Sino-Kazakh relations. According to data from the Ministry of Trade and Integration of Kazakhstan, last year the total trade volume between the two countries reached $30.1 billion (the Chinese customs statistics show more than $40 billion - Editor's note), with exports and imports almost balanced: exports $14.8 billion, imports $15.1 billion.
In recent years, the export structure of Kazakhstan has shown the following growth trends:
Copper and copper cathodes: increased by 40.7%;
Uranium: increased by 39.1%;
Ferroalloys: increased by 44.4%;
Precious metals and their concentrates: increased by 47.9%.
In addition, there has been a significant increase in the export of fuel elements and isotopic separation equipment.
On the other hand, China supplies about 20 main commodities to Kazakhstan, including mobile phones, passenger cars, computers, car bodies, road and construction machinery, as well as various types of automotive and tractor parts.
Jiadra Essetkz, senior expert at the Asian Research Department of the Kazakhstan Strategic Institute, pointed out that many recent cooperation initiatives were formulated according to the political guidelines of both countries.
"The export structure between Kazakhstan and China is gradually optimizing, with an increasing proportion of processed products. This is closely related to China's investment direction: from 2022 to 2024, over 90% of new direct investments from China flowed into high-value-added industries such as petrochemicals, polymer production, refinery modernization, and mechanical manufacturing. The Xinfa Group is currently promoting the construction of an integrated industrial park project in Pavlodar Oblast. The National Energy Investment Group of China has launched an integrated coal chemical project, and automobile assembly projects for brands such as Changan, Haval, and Chery are also being actively promoted, indicating that Chinese capital is accelerating its shift toward manufacturing and technology clusters," she said.
Kazakhstan is gradually transforming from simply utilizing China's economic potential to serve its domestic market to becoming a new role依托China to build logistics corridors. For China, Kazakhstan has become a key land passage to Europe and a gateway for its products to enter the Central Asian market. Under the framework of the "Belt and Road" initiative, freight volumes via Kazakhstan have been increasing year by year.
