【Key Focus: Russian Scientists Invented an Atomic Clock, Improving Navigation Accuracy】
On December 9, 2025, Moscow time, the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Gennadiy Krasnikov, said during a meeting with Russian President Putin:
Russian scientists have invented an atomic clock that can improve navigation accuracy by an order of magnitude. This is an optical atomic clock based on thallium atoms. Certain properties allow them to eliminate errors caused by magnetic and electric physical fields. Moreover, we can achieve the highest precision, up to 10^-16.
Gennadiy Krasnikov added:
The development of this watch was carried out at the Lebedev Physical Institute in Russia, where they were able to achieve high-precision standards. These watches are transportation tools; we can send them into space. The current GLONASS system is only three orders of magnitude, or even two to three orders of magnitude away. If we achieve this, the positioning accuracy will immediately improve by one order of magnitude, just because of this. This is truly world-class. This work was carried out at our Lebedev Physical Institute.
