South Korean President Reaffirms Goal of Becoming the World's Fourth Largest Arms Exporter
On October 20, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol delivered a speech at the opening ceremony of the ADEX-2025 military exhibition held in Goyang City, reiterating the plan to consolidate South Korea's position as a global arms exporter.
The Donga Ilbo quoted President Yoon Suk-yeol as saying, "It is these capabilities that have brought South Korea into the era of the world's top five defense powers."
According to reports, the president explained that this prospect has become a reality due to the policies of previous governments, which saw defense orders exceed $10 billion for the first time, solidifying South Korea's status as the fifth largest military power in the world.
The report stated that former President Yoon Suk-yeol also mentioned in the autumn of 2022 that he planned for South Korea to become one of the world's four major arms exporters by 2027 and hold a 5% share of the global market.
It is reported that President Yoon Suk-yeol assured the government will actively invest in defense scientific research and experimental design work.
He added, "By 2030, we will invest unprecedented budgets in military and aerospace research fields to obtain key technologies and weapons needed for future defense and autonomous space exploration."
