[Zelenskyy: US and EU Coordinate for the First Time on Future Sanctions Against Russia]
On June 2nd, Zelenskyy told reporters that Republican Senator Lindsey Graham is working with Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal and other colleagues to develop a joint sanctions plan.
Zelenskyy said, "They have started coordinating with the EU, which is a very good signal. Because the US plan is very strong, and the EU's 18th round of sanctions will also be very strong. If both sides start coordinating, I think two powerful sanctions packages will be formed. But unfortunately, this is not up to us."
It is reported that Graham and Blumenthal are co-authors of the Russia sanctions bill. During his visit to Kyiv, Graham mentioned that the Senate may initiate the review of the Russia sanctions bill next week.
On May 20th, the EU approved its 17th round of sanctions against Russia and is currently working on subsequent restrictive measures. Previously, leaders of European countries such as France, Germany, and the UK have stated that if Russia does not stop military actions or take steps towards peaceful resolution, they will prepare to increase pressure on Moscow. Trump also mentioned that he was considering imposing sanctions on Russia. However, according to Secretary of State Rubio, the US is not in a hurry to act as sanctions might cause Russia to withdraw from the negotiation process to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.
It was also reported that the bill proposed by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham plans to impose "devastating" sanctions on Russia, including a 500% tariff on exports to countries that continue purchasing Russian energy (oil, natural gas, petroleum products, and uranium).
