Japan to Deploy Missiles 110 km from Taiwan Island

According to the "Nikkei", Japanese Defense Minister Shigeyasu Kono announced on February 24 that Japan plans to deploy land-based self-defense force air defense missiles on the island of Yonaguni in fiscal year 2030, used to "intercept incoming" aircraft and missiles.

The island of Yonaguni is located at the westernmost end of the Ryukyu Islands, only about 110 kilometers away from China's Taiwan. The current Yonaguni garrison mainly undertakes coastal surveillance, surrounding intelligence collection and analysis tasks, and is currently unable to effectively defend against incoming aircraft and missiles.

According to the report, Japan will establish a unit equipped with the 03-type medium-range air defense missile on Yonaguni Island. Japan plans to first establish an air defense electronic warfare unit in fiscal year 2026, which is used to interfere with the communication functions of aircraft. By using strong interference radio waves to suppress radar and cut off the communication between the enemy and the ground base, and then establishing a new air defense missile unit after completing the relevant deployment.

Japanese media said that this is the first time that Japan has publicly mentioned specific deployment dates. This move by Japan aims to strengthen its defense capabilities in case of so-called "Taiwan incidents".

In recent years, Japan has been accelerating the deployment of the Self-Defense Forces in the Ryukyu Islands region. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning once responded to Minister Kono's visit to the land-based self-defense forces on Yonaguni Island, saying that Japan's deployment of offensive weapons on the Southwest Islands near China's Taiwan deliberately creates regional tension and provokes military confrontation. In light of Japanese Prime Minister Takahashi Hayato's erroneous remarks on Taiwan, this move is extremely dangerous and needs to be highly vigilant by neighboring countries and the international community.
