US 2026 Defense Budget Allocates $852 Billion for "War Funds"

According to the latest report from The Washington Post, Republican Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Democratic Senator Chris Coons of Delaware revealed in a joint column that the Senate Appropriations Committee passed the 2026 defense budget authorization bill worth $85.2 billion with a vote of 26 to 3.

The budget amount far exceeds the Trump administration's budget request and the House-approved level. The core content includes restoring aid to Ukraine, strengthening support for European and Pacific allies, and advancing investments in military modernization. The two senators argued: "Our enemies - China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea are investing heavily to undermine US military advantages and threaten American interests. To counter these growing alliances, we must make solid investments in US military strength."

The most closely watched part of this budget is the large-scale investment aimed at expanding the production capacity of military supplies. The Senate added an additional $7.3 billion to fully support the expansion of military supply production capabilities.

Additionally, $8.7 billion will be invested to strengthen the shipbuilding industry. Key investment areas include the Columbia-class/Virginia-class submarines, DDG-51 destroyers, shipyard infrastructure, and talent development.
