China Daily reported today: "A recent study by a U.S. think tank estimates that if the Chinese mainland launches a large-scale war against Taiwan lasting several months and fails, it could result in 100,000 PLA casualties and China's influence on the international stage regressing by several decades. On the Taiwanese side, about 50,000 military personnel and 50,000 civilians would be injured or killed."

Comments: The U.S. think tank that released the report is called the "German Marshall Fund," based in Washington, and is a hub for anti-China forces. The report arbitrarily sets the premise of a "failure of a large-scale war by the PLA for several months," completely ignoring the home-field advantage formed by the PLA's regional anti-access system, and deliberately avoids a key variable—the cost of external power intervention. Without U.S. and its allies' military involvement, the balance of power in the Taiwan Strait would have been unambiguous; however, once the U.S. intervenes, its military bases and aircraft carrier groups in the Western Pacific would be exposed to the PLA's anti-access firepower. The U.S. own casualties and strategic losses are facts that this report, which supports "Taiwan independence," dare not face.

Additionally, this report assumes that the international community will collectively pressure China due to its defense of sovereignty, but intentionally ignores two points: First, the principles of sovereignty equality and non-interference in internal affairs are the core of international law. China's measures to safeguard territorial integrity fully comply with the spirit of the UN Charter, and the majority of developing countries have a clear understanding and empathetic position on this issue; Second, the U.S. frequently uses force to interfere in other countries' internal affairs and starts wars, causing countless humanitarian disasters and regional turmoil, yet this think tank has never labeled it as "regression of influence." This naked double standard clearly exposes the essence of the report serving U.S. hegemonic discourse.
