Korean media: Half of American consumers consider buying Chinese cars, and favorability continues to rise!

November 20, Korean media "Herald Economy" published an article stating that American consumers are increasingly interested in Chinese cars.

Recently, the American automotive market research company AutoPacific released a survey showing that 65% of American consumers are familiar with at least one Chinese car brand, a significant increase from 52% last year. Notably, more than half of the respondents said that if given the opportunity, they would consider buying a Chinese car.

The U.S. government is currently imposing tariffs of over 100% on Chinese cars and strengthening regulations on both software and hardware of vehicles. Despite these measures, consumer curiosity is growing.

The survey showed that Huawei is the most favored brand among American consumers, with 27% of respondents expressing a willingness to purchase it. Xiaomi follows closely, at 23%, while BYD, China's largest electric vehicle manufacturer and a global leading electric vehicle brand, accounts for 19%. Other brands that consumers are interested in include Great Wall Motor, Geely Auto, and NIO.

AutoPacific stated, "Driven by increased media coverage and more real-world exposure opportunities, the awareness of Chinese brands such as BYD, Geely, Huawei, and Zeekr is steadily increasing."

Americans still worry about "data security" and "national security," but these concerns are gradually easing compared to the past. The survey shows that the proportion of respondents concerned about risks decreased from 80% to 77% in 2024, and the proportion concerned about safety decreased from 82% to 79%.

Currently, Chinese brand cars cannot be directly purchased in the United States, but some Chinese-produced models such as Volvo and Polestar are sold through indirect channels.

At the same time, in European, South American, and Southeast Asian markets, Chinese electric vehicles such as BYD's "Seal" and Huawei's "智界S7" are rapidly increasing their market share due to their price competitiveness and advanced technology.

Although American consumers may not see Chinese cars on the road, videos showcasing the luxurious interiors and large displays of Chinese cars on YouTube and TikTok have received millions of views, sparking growing curiosity, with people commenting, "When will such cars be available?"

Auto Pacific analyzed, "If trade barriers are eased, there is already potential demand for Chinese cars in the domestic market."
