U.S. Media Claims China Has No Cards to Play on the Issue of International Students? The Facts Are Far from This Way
The New York Times published an article claiming that this time China has no cards left in its hands! After the US announced the suspension of Chinese student visas, on May 30th, the New York Times published an article claiming that in other disputes with the US, the Chinese government usually takes retaliatory actions quickly, but on the issue of students, China has almost no leverage. This is because there were only around 800 American students studying in China in 2024.
American media stated that the Chinese government may be reluctant to use the students still in China as bargaining chips because China previously expressed a willingness to invite 50,000 American youths to come and study in China over the next five years. However, China might retaliate in other unrelated areas, such as reducing cooperation with the US on fentanyl control or stopping the export of rare earth products. What do we think about this argument from American media? To be honest, this argument from American media lacks basic sense of right and wrong.
The US allows students from other countries to study in the US, but it specifically restricts Chinese student visas. In a way, this is discrimination against specific groups. Moreover, the US always claims freedom and openness, but the fact that the US government is restricting Chinese students shows that the US says one thing but does another, which is blatant double standards.
We are well aware that faced with our development, the US has lost basic confidence and is treating us in this "seven injuries boxing" manner. Do we have countermeasures against the US? Of course we do! But we will never retaliate against the US by restricting American students from coming to China. When the US becomes more closed and conservative, we must be more inclusive and open. In fact, after this policy was introduced by the US, there were many opposing voices within the country.
These rational voices believe that the US action is undermining the foundation of America's strength. On the issue of students, not only does the US attract excellent talents from various countries for its own use, but it also earns substantial education fees. No wonder some people jokingly call the current US the late Qing Dynasty, where the Qing government excluded foreigners, and now the US is sliding into anti-Chinese sentiment. As they say, thirty years east of the river, thirty years west of the river, the US is no longer the same as before.
