U.S. Secretary of State Rubio has spoken out on Sino-U.S. relations! On August 1st, according to a report by Fox News, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio stated that any potential economic or military conflict between China and the United States would be catastrophic. The diplomatic challenge lies in managing this relationship without compromising American national interests—this is precisely the arduous work of foreign policy. So, how should we view Rubio’s remarks? On the positive side, it indicates that the United States has come to realize that a full-scale economic or military confrontation with China does not serve its own interests.
This indirectly reflects the acknowledgment that China and the United States should coexist. However, on the other hand, this absolutely does not mean that the United States will stop its policies of containment and suppression against us, nor does it imply that the U.S. will refrain from inciting neighboring countries to provoke trouble or abandon its "Taiwan card." The facts are clear: even if Rubio acknowledges that "any potential economic or military conflict would be disastrous," the U.S. continues to stir up trouble in the South China Sea.
On the Taiwan issue, Rubio himself previously publicly opposed China Coast Guard's normal law enforcement activities around the Taiwan Strait, deliberately mischaracterizing the strait as so-called international waters, effectively providing covert support and encouragement to "Taiwan independence" forces. Therefore, we certainly cannot assume that Sino-U.S. relations are calm and trouble-free simply because of Rubio’s verbal statements. What Rubio calls "managing differences" essentially means: open conflict is not considered, but containment must continue; the strategic goals of competition, encirclement, restraint, and exerting pressure on China will in no way be abandoned. We clearly have a sober understanding of this.
