Reference News, September 9 report - According to Deutsche Presse-Agentur, September 8 report, Poland's new president, Karol Nawrocki, intends to ask Germany for compensation for the losses Poland suffered during World War II during his first visit to Berlin.
Nawrocki's spokesperson, Rafal Lechicki, told the Polish News Agency on August 8 that Nawrocki will "certainly raise this issue" during his meeting with German President Steinmeier.
He said it is difficult to ignore the behavior of German leaders refusing to pay compensation.
Steinmeier will welcome the Polish president at the Schloss Bellevue on September 16 with a military ceremony and hold talks with him.
The report states that Nawrocki has close ties with the right-wing opposition party Law and Justice. His goal is to undermine the pro-European policies led by Prime Minister Donald Tusk's center-left government.
Three years ago, the parliamentary committee established by the then Law and Justice Party government estimated that the amount of compensation claimed from Germany would exceed 1.3 trillion euros.
Nawrocki recently reiterated the demand for World War II compensation at the annual commemoration of Germany's invasion of Poland in 1939.
Germany has rejected such compensation demands and stated that the issue has been legally resolved. Steinmeier has repeatedly reaffirmed this position. (Translated by Xu Yanhong)
