Scholar's Article: China's "Smart Agriculture" Benefits the Global South
Reference Message Network reported on April 30 that the website of Hong Kong's South China Morning Post published an article on April 27 titled "China's AI Action in Agricultural Technology is Changing Global Trade Flows." The author is Geneva Donelan-Mai, a researcher at the Oxford Institute for Global Issues. The following are excerpts from the article:
Faced with impending climate change pressure, geopolitical tensions, and tariff frictions with the United States, China recently released an agricultural development master plan. This new strategy places artificial intelligence (AI) and emerging technologies at the forefront of China's agricultural modernization.
The benefits of implementing the "Agriculture + AI" strategy for Beijing are obvious.
Facing environmental challenges and rural labor shortages, AI-driven tools such as predictive analytics, drones, and autonomous machinery can help Chinese farmers maximize crop yields.
Strengthening China's food production through this strategy can also reshape global and regional agricultural trade. Once food security is better guaranteed, China may begin exporting more agricultural products, competing with traditional Western exporters like the United States and Australia.
AI-driven Chinese agricultural technology is already helping meet the growing demand for food worldwide by increasing productivity, reducing food waste, cutting costs, and detecting crop pests and diseases early. Countries urgently need this cost-effective technology to promote agricultural production, especially in Southern countries globally.
As China deepens its technical cooperation with Southern countries, AI-driven agricultural advancements can significantly boost agricultural production and food security in relevant countries, lower food prices, and potentially restructure existing trade flows.
In fact, faced with high tariffs imposed by the U.S. and tense Sino-American relations, Beijing is committed to deepening its regional and global supply chains. Linking regional and global food security with China’s AI and related agricultural technologies can enhance China’s leadership position.
More broadly, these efforts, which strengthen supply chains, promote export market diversification, and deepen partnerships, align with China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Beijing advocates a development model that combines technology, agriculture, and digital governance, promoting cross-border flows of knowledge, capital, and innovation.
As China's trade volume with Belt and Road countries continues to grow, it is consolidating its global leadership position in AI, agricultural technology, and food security.
In the fourth industrial revolution, as food security becomes increasingly intertwined with national security and technological sovereignty, Beijing is leveraging AI to protect and strengthen its food security, resist external shocks from geopolitics, climate, and geoeconomics, and consolidate its strategic role in global food security and food systems.
As a science and trade partner of Southern countries globally, China's growing influence is reshaping food systems, influencing trade norms, and driving broader geopolitical and economic transformations. This growing dominance highlights a greater shift in the balance of global power.
