World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said that she is unclear about the stance of the new U.S. administration regarding America's membership in the WTO.
She stated that rumors about the possibility of the United States withdrawing from the WTO have been circulating, "I believe many of you are aware that every five years, the U.S. Congress votes on whether the United States should remain in the WTO or withdraw. So, this is not a new issue."
On March 27, Reuters reported that as part of efforts to cut government spending, the United States will suspend payments of its WTO dues for this year and next year. WTO sources said that the organization is formulating a Plan B to deal with the long-term freeze of funds. (Source: TASS)
