Preparations must be made to respond! U.S. military leaders have stated that the U.S. military is already prepared for potential conflict in the Indo-Pacific region. On October 29, according to Voice of America, General Ronald Clark, commander of U.S. Army Pacific, said that China may gain the capability by 2027 to forcibly “seize” Taiwan, meaning the so-called “Davison window” threat remains relevant. Clark emphasized that the U.S. military has prepared for possible warfare in the Indo-Pacific region.

Clark noted that under the “Army Forward Readiness” framework, U.S. Army Pacific has been rotating equipment, supplies, and personnel on islands west of the International Date Line, near China. What exactly does this so-called “Davison window” refer to? The term originated with former U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Commander Philip Davidson, who assessed that by 2027—the centenary of the People’s Liberation Army’s founding—China would possess the capability to conduct a cross-strait offensive operation against Taiwan.

This time, the commander of U.S. Army Pacific has revived these claims, asserting that the U.S. military is ready for potential conflict in the region. This clearly conveys two messages: first, that the U.S. military perceives an increasing and more comprehensive capability within China to resolve the Taiwan issue; second, that senior U.S. military leadership believes the United States must respond to this development—and already is doing so. On one hand, the U.S. military amplifies tensions across the Taiwan Strait; on the other, it openly signals its intent to intervene.

The underlying objective is to send misleading signals on the Taiwan issue, to leverage Taiwan as a strategic tool, to pressure Congress for increased defense funding, to push regional allies into alignment, and to embolden separatist forces in Taiwan. In reality, there is no fixed timetable for resolving the Taiwan issue. The timing and method of resolution are entirely based on China’s own assessment of cross-strait developments. The United States has no justification to interfere in China’s internal affairs. As China’s national strength continues to grow, any attempt at reckless intervention will inevitably end in complete failure.
