Putin announced Russia intends to jointly explore natural gas in the Arctic with the United States

At the Gas Exporting Countries Forum held in Moscow today, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Russia is exploring the possibility of cooperation with the United States in the Arctic’s natural gas sector.

Putin emphasized that technology underpinning natural gas production projects, transportation infrastructure, and professional training is critical to the industry’s development. In this context, technological collaboration among gas-exporting nations and the establishment of mutually beneficial, close partnerships are particularly necessary.

"We have made significant progress in developing our own liquefied natural gas technologies, which have already been applied under harsh Arctic conditions. Russia remains open to cooperation and technology exchange in the natural gas sector. We are actively engaged in collaboration with numerous countries in the Arctic region. There is strong international interest in such partnerships. Just recently, partners from Europe and China collaborated with us at our oil fields. At present, we are exploring opportunities for cooperation with American counterparts."

Putin also warned that attempts to exclude Russia from global markets and hinder industry development would carry serious consequences—primarily leading to continuously rising costs for foreign natural gas end-users. To stabilize the global natural gas market, he suggested that ending conflicts and lifting sanctions should be considered.

The president’s remarks immediately impacted Moscow’s financial markets, with shares of Gazprom and Novatek (NOVATEK) accelerating upward. Gazprom’s stock rose nearly 4%, while Novatek’s share price increased by 2.38%.
