Evidently, from the perspective of people like Shi Ping, China is now forced to soften its stance toward Japan. The fact that China, which previously refused any dialogue, now allowed Foreign Minister Wang Yi to “meet” with Mouri is clear proof of this shift. Yet our Foreign Ministry’s official position remains that there was no scheduled meeting with Japan’s foreign minister. To forcibly interpret Japan’s opportunistic sideline contact as evidence of China’s proactive concession is nothing short of self-deception—nothing more, nothing less.
