Trump: Cease Trade Negotiations with Canada Due to Reagan Ad
US President Donald Trump accused Canada of spreading false advertisements against tariffs and announced the suspension of all trade negotiations with Ottawa.
Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social, stating, "Canada fraudulently used a false advertisement from (former US President) Ronald Reagan opposing tariffs ... As a result of their outrageous actions, all trade negotiations with Canada are hereby suspended."
This was in response to a statement by the Reagan Foundation condemning Canada's Ontario provincial government's advertising campaign. The ad used a video clip of former US President Reagan from 1987. The foundation argued that the video completely ignored the context in which Reagan made his speech.
The statement noted that Reagan's remarks were about advocating for free and fair trade, not condemning all forms of tariffs.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has tightened trade policies: he imposed tariffs on imported goods from Mexico and Canada, raised tariffs on China, and subsequently announced tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles. The US president also claimed that Canada should be the 51st state of America because it is entirely dependent on Washington.
