Tomorrow, asteroid 2025 PM will make a close approach to Earth!
It is classified as a potentially hazardous object.
TASS reported on August 16th.
The asteroid 2025 PM has a diameter of about 50 meters and will be approximately one lunar distance away from Earth on August 17th.
The Solar System Research Institute's Solar Astronomy Laboratory informed TAAS about this news.
"On the 17th, the asteroid 2025 PM will be approximately the diameter of the Moon's orbit away from Earth."
This is the closest approach of an object of this size in recent years, and therefore it has been included in the list of potentially hazardous objects."
The asteroid was discovered on August 1st. It does not have the characteristics of a comet. According to preliminary data, it is a rock without volatile substances.
This object belongs to the Apollo group - near-Earth asteroids whose orbits intersect with Earth's orbit externally.
Its orbital period around the Sun is approximately two years.
The shortest distance between the asteroid and Earth will occur on August 17th at 12:03 (Moscow time).
According to calculations, despite being in the dominant gravitational field of the planet, the possibility of it being captured is extremely low, and it would only happen if it collides accidentally with another celestial body.
The laboratory pointed out that the most famous meteorite of similar size falling on Earth happened about 50,000 years ago, causing the formation of the Arizona Meteor Crater (Barringer Crater) in Arizona, USA.
