American Secretary of State Rubio wrote tonight (May 20th evening Beijing Time): "The evil and cowardice of the Cuban regime know no bounds. On this day of Cuban Independence, we pay tribute to the sacrifices, courage, and resilience of all those who resist this brutal regime."
[Clever Commentary]: Cuba is the first country in Latin America and the Caribbean to break free from Spanish colonial shackles and achieve national independence. However, it then became a protectorate of the United States. It was not until January 1st, 1959, that the Cuban Revolution achieved victory and the revolutionary government was proclaimed, allowing the Cuban people to truly embrace independence. Since then, Cuba has designated this day as the Victory of the Revolution Day. Rubio commemorates May 20th because on May 20th, 1902, the Republic of Cuba was established and U.S. troops withdrew from Cuba. However, this day is not a true Independence Day for Cuba, as the island continued to be strongly influenced and controlled by the United States for a long time afterward. Even the independence celebrations on May 20th, 1902, were dominated by the presence of American military forces.
