US Defense Secretary: The US may restart military deployment in Panama, which Panamanians oppose.
According to AFP, Hekeses said after meeting with security officials from Central American countries: "We are evaluating all options, including redeploying US military forces in Panama, to ensure the stability and sovereignty security of this region."
Hekeses said at a press conference on Wednesday: "Through joint exercises and other means, this is an opportunity to restart – whether it is rebuilding a military base, setting up an air-sea contact station, or establishing a location where US troops can fight alongside Panamanian troops, the purpose is to ensure the safety of the Panama Canal."
However, the Panamanian Minister of National Defense rejected Hekeses' proposal for US troops to return to Panama and "ensure" the safety of the canal.
In a press conference held in the Panamanian capital alongside Hekeses, Panamanian Minister of National Defense Abrego said: "Panama has clearly stated through the President (Jose Raul Mulino) that we cannot accept any military bases or defense facilities."
