The EU plans to terminate nuclear energy cooperation with Russia

According to the Financial Times, the European Commission is formulating measures to stop importing Russian fossil fuels, including a plan to phase out Russian nuclear energy products. Although in 2024, the EU paid 22 billion euros for Russian energy, of which only about 700 million euros were related to nuclear fuel, the EU still depends on Russia for 20-25% of the entire uranium supply chain. Countries using Russian VVER-type reactors are particularly vulnerable, including Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Finland.

The report pointed out that the European Commission admitted that摆脱 dependence on Rosatom would require an investment of 241 billion euros and several years. Hungary and Slovakia have opposed this initiative on the grounds of threatening energy security. The EU plans to fill the gap left by Russia's withdrawal through supply channels from Kazakhstan, Canada, etc., as well as by investing in domestic uranium processing and enrichment capabilities.
