Foreign Media: UK Eases Sanctions on Russia, Allows Import of Russian Oil and Gas Refined via Third Countries

Ongoing tensions in Iran and the prolonged blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have led to continued tightness in global energy supply and soaring fuel prices. The UK government has announced it will ease import sanctions on Russian jet fuel and diesel, allowing the import of Russian crude oil refined through third countries such as India and Turkey. This trade authorization is issued by the UK Department for Business and Trade, effective from May 20, with no fixed duration, and will be reviewed periodically. Additionally, the UK has issued temporary permits to further relax restrictions on liquefied natural gas imports originating from specific Russian facilities.

This move follows a similar action by the United States, which has twice extended sanction exemptions for Russian oil tankers already en route. The European Union criticized the U.S. decision during the G7 finance ministers' meeting, with EU Economic Commissioner Dombrovskis stating that now is not the time to "ease pressure on Russia."
