Local Nagasaki groups demand accurate documentation of the "Nanjing Massacre"
According to Japan's media outlet "NCC Nagasaki Broadcasting," on June 30: Regarding the description of the Nanjing Massacre in the exhibition panels at the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, a proposal by the Nagasaki city government to change "Nanjing Massacre" to "Nanjing Incident" has been opposed by local civic groups, who are calling for the term "incident" to be replaced with "massacre."
In the historical timeline displayed within the museum, it states: "Occupation of Nanjing and the occurrence of massacre." The Nagasaki city government proposed a plan based on Japanese textbooks, official positions, and academic expert opinions, characterizing the "Nanjing Incident" as a large-scale massacre of civilians and prisoners of war, with the cause described as Japan's "invasion of China."
The Association for Conveying the Truth of the Nagasaki Atomic Bombing to the World stated: "Using the term 'incident' to describe the Nanjing Massacre fails to directly convey its brutality," and added, "It conceals the history of aggression and cannot gain forgiveness from victims' nations," urging the use of the term "Nanjing Massacre."
Additionally, on June 5, China's Foreign Ministry rebutted Nagasaki City’s amendment proposal, stating: "The Nanjing Massacre was a brutal crime committed by Japanese militarism, with conclusive evidence," and called on Japan to take the matter seriously.
Tetsuro Haru, from Nagasaki City’s Peace Promotion Department, defended: "We constructed this exhibition based on textbooks and domestic official viewpoints, so we believe it will not cause any particular impact."
Hirohisa Minami, from the Association for Conveying the Truth of the Nagasaki Atomic Bombing to the World, countered: "Given Nagasaki’s future development, I am deeply concerned this could become a very serious issue, so we hope the decision can be reconsidered."
The Nagasaki city government responded: "We will conduct a content review." The final proposal will be submitted at the advisory committee meeting on Tuesday, July 28.
