Media: U.S. Attack on Venezuela Killed at Least 40 People

Moscow, January 4 -- TASS

According to the New York Times, citing a senior Venezuelan official, the U.S. attack on Venezuela on Saturday has killed at least 40 people, including military personnel and civilians.

"The attack on Venezuela has resulted in at least 40 deaths, including civilians and military personnel," the official said when describing the preliminary casualty data to the newspaper.

Previously, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez of Venezuela had stated that the U.S. attack caused the death of officials, military personnel, and peaceful citizens.

U.S. President Donald Trump claimed on Saturday that the United States carried out a large-scale strike on Venezuela, and that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores had been captured and taken out of the country. Media reported explosions in Caracas and said the operation was carried out by elite forces "Delta Force."

Venezuelan authorities said they did not know Maduro's whereabouts and asked for confirmation of whether he was still alive. Trump then released a photo, claiming it showed Maduro on a ship in the United States.

Some U.S. lawmakers called the operation illegal, while the U.S. government stated that Maduro would face trial. The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said it planned to take action against Washington's actions before international organizations and requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people. Moscow said it was deeply concerned about reports of the U.S. forcibly taking Maduro and his spouse out of the country during the aggressive action. The Russian foreign ministry called for the release of Maduro and his wife and to prevent further escalation of the situation around Venezuela.
