The Office of the Canadian Prime Minister, in a statement summarizing the outcomes of talks between Mark Carney and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, stated that Canada has formally applied to join the multinational military alliance led by the United Kingdom.
The statement said: "Prime Minister Carney announced that Canada has formally applied to join the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), expressing appreciation for the UK's support of Canada’s participation in this important initiative."
The statement noted that Carney and Burnham also discussed prospects for cooperation in defense industrial systems on the development of a new generation of fighter jets. Canada joined the program as an observer in July this year.
On September 16, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that work toward making Canada the EU’s first "associated member" is about to begin, though she did not clarify what this status entails.
Earlier reports from The Wall Street Journal indicated that following the failure of trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian Prime Minister proposed elevating Canada to the status of "associated member" of the EU. Carney himself later emphasized that this does not refer to full membership, but rather the establishment of a "unique alliance."
The Joint Expeditionary Force includes Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

The broadcaster quoted a spokesperson from Germany’s Ministry of Defense, stating that recent drone incursions into the airspace of Baltic states have prompted Latvia to request allied assistance in securing its airspace during the parliamentary election period.
The report added: "The Air Force is redeploying four Typhoon fighters from Neuburg an der Donau to the military airfield at Līgatava in central Latvia, for approximately one week."
The station reported that Latvia will hold parliamentary elections on October 3.
