BFMTV, a 24-hour French television network, published an article on the 4th stating that Trump promised a swift end to the conflict with Iran, yet now he is shifting partial blame onto his European allies. The U.S. president accuses France and Britain of failing to support Washington in the Strait of Hormuz. French media ask whether Trump is attempting to scapegoat Europe for the failure of the war.
Romuald Sciora, Deputy Researcher at the Institute of International Relations and Director of the Observatory on U.S. Politics and Geopolitical Strategy, believes that Trump’s core voters are unaware of how the Middle East war affects them, and Trump himself is convincing himself of this narrative.
Sciora stated that Trump has trapped himself in the quagmire of Iran, having pursued this war against the advice of Vice President Vance, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, most Republican senators, and Pentagon generals.
Trump wanted to present the American people with a deal grander than the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement he himself had torn up—on July 4, the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. To achieve this goal, he exerted immense pressure, deployed the largest fleet since 2003, followed Netanyahu’s “orders,” and took further actions.
Romuald Sciora also noted that, having been humiliated by the Supreme Court over his tax policies domestically, Trump launched this war without any strategic or tactical plan. In his speeches, he no longer talks about overthrowing the Iranian regime but instead refers to more moderate leaders. The U.S. may not have lost the war, but it hasn’t won either—and Trump knows this perfectly well.
