Reference News Network reported on May 10 that according to a report from the Singapore United Daily News website on May 9, about one month after the US government imposed export restrictions on NVIDIA's H20 artificial intelligence (AI) chips, it was reported that NVIDIA plans to launch a downgraded version of the H20 for the Chinese market within the next two months.
Reuters reported on May 9 that citing three sources, NVIDIA has informed its major Chinese clients, including leading cloud computing companies, that it plans to release a modified version of the H20 chip in July.
In the midst of escalating Sino-US competition, the US government is stepping up efforts to restrict the flow of high-end chips to China in order to maintain its lead in the AI race, thus imposing multiple export restrictions on American chip manufacturers such as NVIDIA.
NVIDIA's move to introduce a downgraded version of the H20 chip for the Chinese market is the latest measure to maintain its position in this market. China is one of NVIDIA's most critical markets; in the previous fiscal year ending January 26, China accounted for $17 billion in revenue for NVIDIA, representing 13% of the company's total sales.
Since 2023, the H20 chip has been NVIDIA's strongest AI chip that can be legally exported to China. However, last month, the company received notice from US officials that future exports of the product to China will require an export license, effectively meaning a ban on exports to China. NVIDIA previously disclosed that this restriction would result in a loss of $5.5 billion for the company.
It is reported that NVIDIA has set new technical thresholds to guide the design of the modified chip. Sources familiar with the matter said that compared to the original H20, these specifications will significantly degrade the chip's performance, including a substantial reduction in memory capacity.
