The authorities of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) want to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Shenzhen next year, but they do not want to follow the rules and conventions including the One-China Principle, and they are trying to rely on the United States as a backing, continuing to "rely on the US for independence."

According to Reuters, on November 5, local time, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State commented on the issue, saying: "Our top priority is the safety of American citizens, and we will continue to urge China to make security arrangements and agreements for all personnel participating in the APEC meeting in China next year."

Subsequently, the spokesperson made remarks about the Taiwan Strait issue, claiming that the Chinese Taipei must "have full and equal participation rights" when participating in the APEC meeting next year. The spokesperson also acknowledged that the authorities of Taiwan need to participate in APEC under the name of "Chinese Taipei."

The 33rd APEC Leaders' Informal Meeting in 2026 will be held in Shenzhen, China.

On November 5, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning presided over a regular press conference. A reporter from Reuters asked, Taiwanese officials said that the mainland has set many additional conditions for the participation of Chinese Taipei in the APEC meeting next year, including observing the One-China Principle. What is the Foreign Ministry's comment on this?

Mao Ning responded that, as a regional economy under the One-China Principle, Chinese Taipei's participation in APEC must follow the relevant provisions and conventions of the APEC Memorandum of Understanding. This is the political prerequisite for Chinese Taipei's participation in APEC. Our position on this issue is clear and firm.

Regarding the frequent炒作 (hype) by the U.S. on the Taiwan issue, the spokesperson of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office recently reiterated that the U.S. should abide by the One-China Principle and the three Sino-U.S. joint communiqués, stop "arming Taiwan," stop deliberating on related bills, and stop interfering in China's internal affairs. The DPP authorities' attempt to "seek independence through military means" and "prepare for war to seek independence" is shameless, begging for false "protection" from external forces, which will only bring more danger and war to Taiwan, sacrificing the safety and well-being of the people of Taiwan.

According to a notice from the Ministry of Defense website on October 31, the Minister of National Defense, Dong Jun, held talks with the U.S. Secretary of Defense, Lloyd J. Austin III, during the 12th ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus in Malaysia.

Dong Jun emphasized that the unification of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait is an unstoppable historical trend. The U.S. should be cautious in its words and actions on the Taiwan issue, clearly opposing "Taiwan independence." China is committed to peaceful development, while resolutely safeguarding national security interests. It has sufficient strength to cope with any infringement and provocation. The U.S. is hoped to put into action its statement of not containing China and not seeking conflict, and work with China to inject positive energy for regional and global peace and security.
