Thailand's government will withdraw the controversial casino legalization bill
Due to high public opposition and domestic political turmoil, Thailand's government will withdraw a controversial casino legalization bill.
Bloomberg reported that the leader of the Pheu Thai Party, Wises, said on Monday (July 7) that the bill, which was scheduled to be submitted to the parliament for review on July 9, will have a motion to withdraw proposed on that day.
Previously, the government had said it would delay submitting the bill and stated that more time was needed to communicate with the public and respond to concerns about gambling addiction and money laundering.
This bill was originally the first major agenda item after the House of Representatives resumed work last week. The second largest party in the ruling coalition, the Suriya Party, had always opposed this bill, but the Suriya Party left the ruling coalition last month.
After losing the majority of seats in the ruling coalition, the government may find it difficult to pass contentious or key bills in the coming months. The budget for the next fiscal year (starting in October) is expected to go through second and third readings in August.
