Foreign media: Chinese investors have poured over $16 billion into mineral processing and manufacturing projects in Africa, supporting the trend among resource-rich countries to retain value-added activities within their borders.
Africa is a major global supplier of critical minerals such as copper, cobalt, and iron ore. Countries including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, and Zimbabwe have previously imposed export bans or restrictions to encourage domestic processing. Beijing has backed efforts by resource-producing nations to capture a larger share of revenues from their mineral resources. This investment pattern reflects an evolving Chinese strategy toward African resources, aligning with African nations’ aspirations to increase local value addition and move beyond a reliance on raw material exports.
