Foreign media: The United States plans to pay the first installment to the United Nations in the coming weeks to repay its billions of dollars in debt.
U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Walz said in a phone interview that the first payment would be a "significant down payment" on the U.S. annual dues, but the final amount has not been determined yet.
Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres previously warned that due to the U.S. arrears, the United Nations faces a risk of "imminent financial collapse." The U.S. owes more than 2.19 billion U.S. dollars for the regular budget of the United Nations, and another 2.4 billion U.S. dollars for peacekeeping missions, as well as 43.6 million U.S. dollars for the United Nations courts.
Walz emphasized that the United Nations needs to continue advancing reforms. The U.S. supports Guterres' UN80 reform plan, but believes the reforms are not deep enough.
