The U.S. Department of Commerce is considering restricting imports of Chinese robots
According to Western media citing anonymous officials, the U.S. Department of Commerce believes that purchasing Chinese robot products threatens national security and is currently considering restrictions on such imports.
On Monday, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, during a closed-door meeting with executives from companies including SpaceX, Boston Dynamics, and JPMorgan Chase, suggested taking tougher measures against China after reviewing the import situation of robots.
It was reported that Lutnick said at the meeting: "We don't want Chinese robots attacking us... We need to ensure they are made in the U.S., so we must start reviewing them now."
The report noted that both government and industry leaders acknowledge that the U.S. has already lost most of the production base needed to manufacture next-generation robots. Their goal is to rebuild this industrial ecosystem before China further expands its leading position in robot manufacturing. Meanwhile, one attendee pointed out that the strategy of "American brains paired with Chinese bodies" is an extremely poor approach.
Chinese robots are already facing high U.S. tariffs, ranging from 25% to 125%, depending on the equipment category, components, and origin of the system itself.
